The two that come to my mind first are White Oleander by Janet Fitch and The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. (Though The Mists of Avalon is historical fantasy, instead of something set in the modern world; do you only mean books that are set in the modern world?)

... made it into trade paperback, and finally came out in mass market a couple of years after that. Some books, like White Oleander, start out in hardcover, go to trade, make it into mass market, and go back to trade.

Xenalyte I couldn't stand White Oleander either nor did I like Lovely Bones. SueK I gave both of these books to a friend of mine and she loved them.

Xenalyte- White Oleander was actualy a very beautiful, heart wretching story. and i on the other hand loved the book. the movie was just as beautiful. But, to each his own.
