White Oleander is a good choice! A little depressing, but very good. Once again, though, it's the only one from the list I've actually read.

The two that come to my mind first are White Oleander by Janet Fitch and The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. (Though The Mists of Avalon is historical fantasy, instead of something set in the modern world; do you only mean books that are set in the modern world?)

Xenalyte I couldn't stand White Oleander either nor did I like Lovely Bones. SueK I gave both of these books to a friend of mine and she loved them.
Xenalyte- White Oleander was actualy a very beautiful, heart wretching story. and i on the other hand loved the book. the movie was just as beautiful.

My mother loaned it to me - "you will just LOVE this book!" were her exact words.
Oh, how she lied. What an unutterable piece of crap that was.
Speaking of Oprah books, White Oleander is an unredeemable piece of hideous trash. My mother loaned it to me, and I couldn't give it back to her fast enough. I spent the entire book yelling, "Oh, for the love of God, take some Prozac and shut the hell UP already!"
