Saki (Hector Hugo Munroe) is perhaps the most graceful spokesman for England's "golden afternoon" - the slow and peaceful years before World War I. This volume contains the whole of Saki's work - all the short stories, his three novels and three plays.

2682 The Complete Works of Saki H. H. Munro (read 5 Dec 1994) This book contains many short stories, only about a dozen of which are noteworthy. There are three novels also in the book. The Unbearable Bassington is boring. When William Came tells of a German conquest of England: not a prefigure of Nazi rule, it shows life going on for collaborators. There are three plays. "The Watched Pot" is a very sparkling and witty one, which I'd like to see performed. All in all, reading this book (big) was quite a chore, but it had its moments. ( )

Possibly the most elegant writer of all time, Saki crafted dozens of jewel-like and extremely witty short stories--often starring the languid yet mischievous Clovis Sangrail--before his life was cut short, tragically, during World War I. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0760773734, Paperback)

Saki was called the Oscar Wilde of his day, and hailed as a master stylist. Using witty dialogue and macabre humor, he writes of mischievous young men, foolish aunts, and blood-thirsty beasts. His stories are surprisingly modern in their incongruous mixture of humor and horror. The first truly comprehensive edition of Saki's voluminous output. The Complet Works of Saki includes six previously uncollected stories.
