Other affordable scanners

Why this page?

Scanning with the CueCat requires that you move the scanner along the code. It takes some experience, but once you get the knack, it works quite well.

However, there are dozens of other scanners out there - some with bigger scan areas, etc.. Most are expensive. I started this page to collect recommendations for inexpensive scanners, which we - the community - KNOW work with LT.

  • (BStrauss3) I purchased and have scanned 100s of books using the 'ACAN 8100 Handheld USB Barcode Scanner', which I've bought direct from Hong Kong for about US$42 from DealExtreme. In September 2008, it was SKU 12559.
I just got the same scanner from DealExtreme and it works well. -- [jtomlinson]

Do we know if the 'ACAN 8100 Handheld USB Barcode Scanner' works on Mac OSX or is it a Windows only device? I know there have been some problems with some barcode scanners only working on one platform and not another. -- [jreinhart]

I bought an Acan USB Barcode Scanner Reader, which I believe to be the same model as above, from Amazon.co.uk recently, for less than £30 (30 pounds sterling), although I see the price has gone up slightly since then and that the supplier has changed. Anyway, the scanner works perfectly well with LT on both Windows Vista and on Ubuntu Linux. I should imagine it will be fine on Mac OSX - but don't quote me on that! The Acan 8100 is a nice little scanner... but it's a little sloppy about its USB-HID compliance so the default usbhid driver on Linux mustn't be allowed to grab hold of it. (You have to use the less featureful and more lenient usbkbd driver or it goes to sleep when you try to scan something other than a configuration code) See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BarcodeReaders for instructions. --Ssokolow 22:39, 15 October 2009 (EDT)
  • Datalogic Touch 65/90 Light/Pro - I have successfully used the Touch 65 Light on Ubuntu 9.04 Linux to scan all my books. It acts like a USB Keyboard. The other similar models will presumably work just as well.--Psyke 11:23, 11 December 2009 (EST)
