About meA history graduate from the North West of England. I probably spend too much time reading and thinking and not enough doing.

About my libraryI use LibraryThing to list what I have read or would like to read, rather than necessarily to catalogue books that I actually own. Despite my history background, fiction titles probably out-number fact by about four to one.

In my current rating system, two stars are given to books that I did not like for one reason or another. They are not necessarily bad books, they just did not work for me at te time I picked them up. A rating of 2.5 suggests a neutral stance, and anything higher than that denotes varying degrees of enthusiasm. No rating does not necessarily mean that I disliked a book, I might not actually have read it yet!

Sounds engagingly hermetic. I'll read it soon, and let you know my thoughts. Meanwhile, I'm just beginning The Lost Art of Gratitude. That's for night-time; my current day-time book is Christopher Andrew's history of MI5. Great stuff, but I'm past the best part: the Edwardian years. As Lucia's Georgia might have said to Harold Macmillan, had they been introduced, "I've always found the Cold War so tarsome."
Likewise. Nice to meet you. Re Isabel and her world, I couldn’t agree more. I too am just beginning a library copy of LAOG. I expect I’ll enjoy it enough to buy, as I have others in this series. I see we both have “The Pupil” by Caro Fraser. I haven’t read it yet, but was drawn to its apparent mixture of stuffiness and mayhem. If you’ve read it, what’s your impression?
