About meI love books! I love books! Poetry, literature, nature and gardening, spirituality, memoir, lyrical prose of any kind. One of my "vices" is running a book sale each year just to fondle all the books....

Because of my work as a health educator (working mostly in mental health areas), I read memoirs to help me understand the the personal, lived experience of these conditions. Isn't it great when one gets to read for work and pleasure simultaneously?!

Also, check out Bookins - a great book swap web-site. It is easy to use, and just as addictive as LibraryThing.com! www.bookins.com

And, another great place to find quality, new books (remainders) is daedalus books, found at www.salebooks.com.

About my libraryBecause of Bookins (see above) it's ever-changing. I list books I have read and/or owned. TBR = to be read (and, alas, there are too many of these!)

I attended the NY Antiquarian Book Fair (2008) on a whim, and now I am hooked! I am busy tagging all of my first editions, and starting to think about how I might shape and store my collection of favorite authors, poets, volumes. I didn't think I could get more book-addicted, but I am seeing a new level here! Yikes!

Wise Choices

There are easy choices, and there are choices that reflect wisdom. Consider these wise choices that bring happiness and success...

Choose to love rather than hate

Choose to learn rather than loaf.

Choose to smile rather than frown.

Choose to build rather than destroy.

Choose to analyze rather than guess.

Choose to persevere rather than quit.

Choose to praise rather than gossip.

Choose to heal rather than wound.

Choose to give rather than grasp.

Choose to act rather than delay.

Choose forgive rather than curse.

Choose to pray rather than despair.

Choose to get up rather than give up.

Noticed that you liked The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here (as well as on a few other book-related sites). I thought you might like my novel since it's been compared to that novel by a number of reviewers. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like. Let me know if you're interested. Here's a link to a summary in case you're interested:

Dear Laura

I read all of your reviews and now I want to read all of your 4 to 5 star books. I had completely forgotten Snow Flower and the Secret Fan! I loved the book!!! There are so many books that I've read over time that I don't have on my list! I loved Water for Elephants and Secret Life of Bees too! I don't think you rated Bees... You read Three Cups of Tea but didn't rate it?? I really liked that book too!

I just received 5 books (which I bought used from Amazon) and don't know what to read first..I wish I had more time!

I enjoyed reading your profile page!
This is such fun!!!

Thanks for the message!

Louise

ps your reviews are beautiful!
Hi Laura - we have lots of similar tastes in fiction and non-fiction. I enjoyed looking through your library and will check back often for your suggestions. I sure understand having too many of those TBR books!
Oh my. We have an annual used book sale at our school, which I am chairing for the 5th year - and I spend all year assessing my collection, wondering who I will part with, what gems will I find this time...It has gotten quite out of hand, my TBR list explodes each spring. Nice to know I'm not the only book fondler out there.....
I perused your author cloud, nice to see Annie Dillard in bold...I just discovered her a few years back when I read Total Eclipse - it took my breath away. Mary Oliver is another favorite of mine. Your library is inspiring!
thanks for the bookins tip. it looks absolutely addictive. :)
you have an amazing collection of books and poetry. I also love mary oliver and agree with the books i have read that are in your top ten!! i will definitely keep an eye on what you are reading!
Hi Laura-

It's really fun to find other people who share similar interests! What I find so fascinating about this website, are the books I don't have in common with other people! I think it will definitely help me broaden my horizons.
Hi back to you, Laura! Thanks for visiting my profile page! I love browsing other readers' catalogs...esp. when they've rated them so faithfully, as you have. My TBR pile keeps growing...definitely much faster than I've been reading lately! I hope to have a larger percentage of my books rated someday (!), although that's never going to happen if I don't stop adding new books! So addicting, isn't it??
Hi Laura,
Thanks for joining the UU Readers group! I'm curious as to how successful your annual booksale fundraiser is? We've been doing a "Time and Talent" auction for a few years, and it's a lot of work for not so much money. Maybe a book sale / exchange would be better...
Best,
