GroupsFor the Love of Wilde!, I Love Jane Austen, Romance - from historical to contemporary

About meFollowing my retirement in 2003 from the semiconductor industry in Silicon Valley, CA, I moved to Grants Pass, Oregon.

My hobbies include writing, travel, photography, reading, quilting, along with a multitude of textile and mixed media arts. I have been to 45 of the 50 states and plan to get to the last five in the next few years as I'm contemplating doing some RVing.

I am a member of The Jane Austen Society (JASNA).

About my libraryI actually own all the books in my LibraryThing and have read the vast majority of them. However, I always have a backup of a few hundred books waiting to be read as one never wants to run out of books. My collection covers many genres and is also a reflection of my evolving literary interests over my lifetime. The genres include Classic Literature (Austen, Dickens, Wilde, etal), history, biography, general fiction, mystery, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, travel and theatre, as well as books on my various hobbies: quilting, embroidery, dollmaking, jewelry making, sewing, knitting, ad infinitim.

I find myself unable to pass a bookstore without stopping in for a visit; the smell of book paper is quite an aphrodesiac. I've noticed that my car now stops for all bookstores without my telling it to do so. Even in Wal-Mart I check out the books first and linger for long periods of time checking my TO BUY list to see if any of the new books have arrived yet, before doing a speed-shop through the rest of the store. I have added a new passion of haunting used book stores and rejoice in finding that one book that has eluded me for months. Powell's bookstore in Portland is a destination; Amazon.com is nirvana.

Memorable moments: walking down Charing Cross Road in London. There is no #84, but it is a charming street full of bookstores nonetheless. Also, visiting the many places where Jane Austen lived and meeting her relatives; also sitting in the room in the house where Jane passed away just outside of Winchester Cathedral. The homes of The Brontes, Dickens, Kipling, H.G. Wells, Louisa May Alcott, Hathorne, Longfellow and other authors have been equally compelling.
